Foodie
Introducing Foodie – the smart kitchen helper designed to minimize food waste and show users how to achieve a more sustainable cooking habit.
The idea
Food Waste is a proper problem in today's society, let alone the European Unions produces 88 million tons of waste per year. One thing that could help the society to reduce waste is the app Foodie. The app is designed to help you waste less food by creating an automatic meal plan, according to the meal plan a shopping list is generated. In addition, the app provides the user with tips on how to properly store food. Every recipe also includes a "leftover section", this should give the user some inspiration what to do with leftovers. For example, the peel of vegetables does not have to end up in the trash, but can be used for vegetable broth. Of course, this app is not the universal solution against food waste, but every household can make its own small contribution and there is also a financial benefit.
User Experience Design
The user research included an online survey, a qualitative user interview with five people, the persona including a mood board and "What's in my bag" as well as two scenarios - a problem scenario and a solution scenario. Based on this user research, prototypes were created, which were tested and improved in an iterative process.
The survey as well as the interviews showed the two main reasons why food ends up in the garbage are, that people poorly plan their groceries which leads to too much waste and that people store the food incorrectly which makes them go bad faster.
